A rapid fall from grace We've been to L'Unico before, and we had fond memories of a top drawer night - underpinned by the kindness of the chef who gave us a full bottle of the olive oil they use as we commented on how good it was. Imagine how dissapointed we are to have that completely up ended. We sent the steak back twice. A scotch fillet in a restaurant should be thick and well selected. For $28 we got a thin snitzel-like cut that was overcooked. The staff (particularly Chris, a male waiter) were rude, patronising and arrogant. The female maitre'd was unhelpful and suggested that I should 'make it up to my wife' for the fact that her birthday meal was ruined by her establishment. She also said there had been a 'change of owner' as if to say that the new owners would accept being blamed for the serious decline in food and staff in recent times. She did nothing about all the trouble we were having and offered no compensation with the bill. The veal was dry and overcooked and a measly portion for the money. The vegetables that were on the plate for the steak sent back were not replaced, but we were charged for them. When we walked in I asked for our wine to be decantered, it was not. The starters were ordinary - salmon carpaccio with nothing to recommended it and white asparagus that was stringy. They seem to no longer emphasise quality fresh ingredients and good cuts. Better steaks in a Surry Hills pub for $5. It was busy so obviously the kitchen cannot maintain consistent standards when under pressure. A change of owner, a change of chef and the whole operation has gone to the dogs. Massive disappointment. [10 Dec 2005 07:58:58]
