BYO PIZZA A Famous Icon that lives on its faded reputation. 20 years ago Australians were seduced by tinned champignons, and the flickering light of a wax cased Matuese bottle. 20 years later, the same "ambience" does not wash with this diner. While contemplating the menu over a lenghty period due to a delay in service, I decided on a pizza. Comes my time for order, and the waitress informs me "we have run out of pizza". Too stunned to reply I decided on a pasta dish."Casa Nostra Special", described as chicken and mushrooms in a creamy tomato sauce. the dish presented in a tiny oval bowl reminiscient of teenage days at Pizza Hut. Yes there was a coating of sauce, but the tiny flecks of chicken, and tinned champignions, did not make this dish "special". I gazed at my partners dish, which was a highly salted tomato sauce over bigger bits of chicken. Not worth the $18 dollar price tag. A side dish of vegetables to accompany had potatoes, and boiled alive ends of mushed broccoli. Fine if you have a toddler. Insult to injury followed when I saw pizzas being delivered to other tables. On asking for the bill(five times)this was mentioned, and disappointment at the service. A party member said we would not return. The waitress reply "Well good, don't come back" So, why do people eat there? Your guess is as good as mine. Perhaps they too are dreaming of halcyon days 20 years ago!! [27 Apr 2003 00:34:15]

Complacency Rules (not) OK In a town seemingly dominated by culinary mediocrity, little hope is offered by this tired establishment. Eastside die-hards may romanticise it's past as a cutting-edge dinner-house but it serves more as a dated social conduit than a satisfying dinner experience. Whilst this isn't such a bad thing, it IS when you pay top dollar for stock-standard Barilla pasta that you can morph into the perfect pasta meal at home with minimal effort...and at minimal cost...and with friends and nice surroundings to boot! This is one self-indulgent familial enterprise with one eye on the cash register and no handle on quality. And "knowing the owner" might have equated to celebrity in 1980 but not in 2003...one could regard it more as an addition to the Alice Springs heritage walk than as a valid contemporary eating establishment. Like the previous reviewer, we too witnessed seriously poor customer service but with the addition of unwashed stucco walls and meals that arrived 4 1/2 years too late. The owners should invest some money in improvements - after all, the local community has been very kind for many, many years...... [08 Aug 2003 08:34:26]
