Great Food! We stumbled across this place but are very grateful we did. The restaurant is a good sized room in a large queenslander with nice gardens. The set-up was simple but was clean, pleasant, had all dinner items you would normally expect and with tables not too crowded together.
We were there for lunch and you could order a light meal from a short menu. However, we went for a longer "Chef's Choice" meal which involves 5 courses plus coffee for $30/head. We actually counted 7 courses but were there at a quiet time and before a booked out dinner session so maybe got lucky.
The food was, in short, fantastic! While there were example menus, what you actually receive is determined by what the owner/chef is cooking that day. This adds an element of surprise to the meal but he was very open to our preferences (i.e. my wife is allergic to some foods and he was very conscious of ensuring that any substitute products he used were acceptable).
The meal portions were moderate so that we never felt bloated at any stage of the meal which enabled enjoyment of each course. However, the portions were not of a size where we felt we were not getting great value for money. Each course was very well presented, included high quality ingredients (e.g. we variously had dishes including grilled prawns, numerous mussels, roasted macadamias, raspberries, etc).
The flavour combinations for each course were great as well as being quite distinct between courses. Service was prompt (again it was a relatively quiet time) and the owner/chef very good in describing each course.
The wine we had with the meal was also good and, while we had a wine from the owner's range, several options from the local competitors were also available.
Basically, if you are after a very formal affair you may be disappointed. However, if you prefer a more relaxed atmosphere with great food, good value for money and a chef who clearly obtains a great deal of enjoyment from cooking, then this place is spot on. [12 Nov 2001 19:59:12]
