A belly full of curry Dropped in with the family, without a booking, after being handed a flyer on the street. The restuarant is small without being pokey. Seating perhaps 60 people at most, the tables are well spaced with plenty of room to move. The decor is typically Indian but on the more subdued end of the spectrum. There are some bold colours but they do not overwhelm. We were greeted immediately and seated quickly. A waitress, in Indian dress, gave us a quick run-down on the menu, both a la carte and buffet, whilst serving chilled water. She was pleasant and knowledgable without being pushy. We chose the buffet as it had a good selection of both meat-based and vegetarian dishes at a reasonable price. It was a good choice. The food was traditional Indian and tasty, served hot and replenished frequently. Other than the na'an (which seemed to disappear as soon as it left the kitchen) there was a good supply of all dishes at all times. The lamb masala and the vegetable pakora were the best any of us had tasted. The chana masala was well worth an honourable mention. We didn't make use of the bar having chosen the BYO option but the range was adequate and the prices reasonable. Towards the end of our meal, and quite unexpectedly, the maitre d' called on all the customers to put there hands together to welcome "Rose". Bemused, we obligued and were rewarded with the arrival of a belly-dancer! Althought not really in keeping with the Indian theme, it was terrific. She was sensuous yet not tacky. Moving amongst the tables, she whirled and gyrated to 4 dances before disappearing to rousing applause. A wonderful surprise. All in all, we thoroughly enjoyed dining at Sunaly@Freo and will definitely go back again (although my youngest did suggest we refrain from spreading the word or it might become so popular we won't be able to get a table next time). Highly recommended for lovers of real Indian food at a reasonable price. [25 Jul 2004 02:54:39]
