Our dinner at Biras Creek was at once excellent yet disappointing. At a hefty US$59 prix fixe plus gratuity one would expect the absolute best in every way. Unfortunately, although every dish was superb, Biras Creek fell short in both service and selection.
To make quick work of the cuisine, excellent. My lamb medallions were lucious. The pate fois gras was, according to my expert wife, one of the best in the world although I was not enamoured with the super-whipped quality. Other dishes including a fine bream were as good. Only the crab and avocado appetizer seemed below par, with little crab. Other than a preponderance of eggplant dishes, the food itself gets 5 stars.
However, the problem we found was that the selection of dishes was minimal. Only 4 appetizers were on the menu (the pate, crab/avocado, a Caesar salad and something else). The main course menu had only about 7 items on it. Several were eggplant derivatives. One was bowtie pasta (!). Only the lamd was a meat course. At the price charged one would expect a little more selection; one of the joys of dining is that terrible feeling of trying to decide between two or three super items! Personally, the lamb was the only item which struck me.
For dessert there were only 5 choices: a trifle, chocolate mousse, fruit, ice cream and sorbet. Now I really don't consider ice cream and sorbets as upscale desserts (even though the presentation was ostentaciously upscale), leaving only a choice of 2 desserts.
Service was only average. The wine steward brough my selection to the table with his hand grabbing the neck, shoved it in front of me and grunted, "This one?". Unfortunately it was the wrong bottle and he had to return with the correct choice. Double unfortunately, the coarse presentation repeated itself. It added to the humor of the evening, however.
Bottom line, there are many better places to dine in Virgin Gorda . . . it isn't worth the effort to go to Biras. [02 Jun 2001 13:16:28]
