Elegant and Casual This was our first time at the Manteo, and we wanted to try out the much talked about cuisine of the Wild Apple Grill.
The dining room is very elegant, with a panoramic lake view, an airy atmosphere and light woods everywhere. At the same time it is casual, exemplified by the friendly staff and the paper table coverings, accompanied by a set of crayons on each table. Somehow, this combination seems to work here.
We were looked after quite competently and attentively; the service was very good. The only gaffe was that the server seating us led us to a part of the restaurant where a boisterous group of a dozen or so patrons were relaxing and enjoying themselves. Noisily. By the time we realized there was a problem, we didn't feel like moving anymore, even though the server offered.
The food that followed was fresh, tasty, imaginative and satisfying. A spicy trio of baked oysters and Louisiana crab cakes were the two appies sampled, and we split a very large Asian noodle main dish salad with beef brochettes, which had an -- albeit fairly sweet -- exotic dressing.
The dessert from the fresh sheet was a chocolate brownie decadence dish that delivered what it promised. Chocolaty decadence.
It was a fine evening at the Wild Apple Grill, with only a few flaws that detracted from the experience. [19 Mar 2002 01:23:59]

seared chicken Our seared chicken had not at all a tiniest spot of browned "seared" surface. As far as I am concerned,it was microwave-oven cooked. The restaurant manager denied this strongly. [02 Nov 2003 18:08:38]

My husband and I dined at the Wild Apple Grill and not only was the view beautiful the staff was very friendly and really made us feel at home. The wine list is quite extensive and the presentation of the food was just beautiful. [22 Apr 2004 15:36:19]

We were a group of four and I found the service to be excellent.
Two comments:
I and one other person could not read the menu headings when the lights were lowered. It is a very poor idea to put the heading in pale green (the price also). It was both embarassing and annoying to have to ask someone else to read the headers for the descriptions which were clearly legible. I just gave up and ordered what they ordered in the end.
When four people are served a basket of very crusty bread, it would be nice to have a pat of butter each and not have to share one little pat in the dish. We actually asked for more butter with the bread a second time and received three.
I enjoyed the meal and was pleased with the portion size. I would just have liked to know what the options were on the menu without having to ask a client that I had with me. [11 Oct 2006 00:38:21]
