Description

A historic stone house near Summerland's downtown core forms the heart of this recently refurbished restaurant. The formal yet comfortable atmosphere has been preserved. A large fireplace and high ceiling are main features of the new room and there will often be someone at the piano on the weekends.

The menu features many familiar European and Italian items, such as Chicken Florentine and Steak au Poivre. The wine list has an extensive BC section.

Good Continental Fare in a Nice Setting
This was the first time I had been back to this restaurant since it had been renovated and modernized. The feeling of the old stone house has been well integrated with the new section.

The menu is a little traditional for my taste, but the items I tasted were all good to very good. Frog's legs were tasty as was the saganaki (fried cheese) appetizer. The quality of the meat cuts showed through with the Tournedos Burgundy and the lamb chops. The sauces and the vegetables were a little bit of a let-down, since both were fairly uninteresting.

Overall, a most pleasant experience, however.    [04 Jan 2001 16:14:38]

Talk About Ambiance
This beautifully renovated restaurant is a delight to the eye as well as the tastes. I thought that the eclectic decor was wonderful and all the old family portraits made an interesting touch. I felt like I was being treated as if I was in someone's home.    [14 Jul 2001 17:51:22]

Disappointed After Recent Revisit
For the last five years or so, we've enjoyed a semi-yearly visit to the Stonehouse Restaurant when we've been in the region and in the mood for an above-average meal. Unfortunately our most recent visit, on December 27th, left us with a very bad impression.

Over the last few years we've watched the menu go from a fairly tight and clearly programmed classical French cuisine to a mish-mash of Mediterranean and North American dishes - no doubt by necessity to cater to the diversity of the small client base. However, we generally found the dishes tasty and individually constructed. Not on our last visit, though. A largish party of 7, we ordered everything from lamb to Thai prawns. Unfortunately, every dish came with exactly the same bland accompaniments (turnips, a baseball-sized potato "croquette", broccoli and nebulous red-tinted rice). With dishes as diverse as they were, we felt the sides could have been tailored to each particular dish to complement the meat and the sauce.

It got worse. The meats all seemed to have been pre-cooked and quickly micro-waved (the chicken brought back memories of university cafeteria meals). And as a final touch, the sauces were outstanding for their blandness and their common overpowering corn-starchy character.

It's too bad, really, as the region needs more good restaurants and this one seems to have regressed to the sort of diner-style fare that is all too common. Perhaps it was due to a stand-in holiday kitchen staff? Let's hope so.    [03 Jan 2003 15:42:11]

I went to this restaurant in November of 2002. It was marvelous. The best Caesar salad I have ever had. So garlicky. Just great and so was everything else. Great service.    [03 Oct 2003 17:57:20]

Sept 2003 Visit Excellent
I have a wife and 2 daughters - 18 and 21. We live in Kelowna but drive regularly south through Summerland. We always stop at Zias for lunch and have never been disappointed. The chicken breast in apricot sauce is my fave. My girls love the spring rolls. I always get a side order of thier wedgies. Makes my mouth water just talking about it.    [26 Nov 2003 14:34:28]

What a Great Place to Eat
We had a superb dinner at Zias. The food was delicious and presented well, staff was very friendly and the atmosphere just lovely. How nice to eat somewhere with live background music. We were suprised at how inexpensive it was.    [02 Dec 2003 14:26:21]

Wonderful Experience
We had heard that Zia's was excellent, but decided to try it out ourselves shortly after moving to Summerland. Coming inside from a chilly February wind, we appreciated the roaring fire and cozy setting. As soon as we were seated, a woman started playing the piano beautifully, and we thought we had hit the jackpot!

I had a chicken curry dish over rice that was quite mild. My wife had the drunken medallions (pork tenderloin) -- it was fantastic. The prices are reasonable, the service excellent...I think we'll become regular visitors.    [04 Mar 2004 12:17:12]

A Great Place
We had an enjoyable dinner at Zia's. I had the prime rib and my date had the Thai chicken. Broccoli, cauliflower, carrots, rice and the best roasted potatoes came with the plate. The food was hot and well presented. Each section of Zia's has a different, yet comfortable atmosphere. Our server looked after us well and could even speak French!

The prices are low, and the food is definitely aimed at condo owners. The homemade cherry custard ice cream was so good! It finished of the meal on a high note.    [09 Aug 2004 03:06:28]

Enjoyable Experience
I have dined at the Stonehouse a number of times but the last visit was the best. My partner and I shared the Classic which includes beef tenderloin, drunken pork tenderloin, Thai curry chicken and a shrimp dish all served with rice, roasted potatoes, and a variety of fresh vegetables. For a starter we had a salad and I thoroughly enjoyed the raspberry vinagariette. For dessert we shared a delicious tiramisu.

This shared meal was so large we were able to take home enough for lunch the next day. On this visit we sat in the 'old house' and found the atmosphere wonderful.    [29 Aug 2004 18:33:39]

A Bit Ho Hum
Lovely building and very pleasant staff, but the food is becoming a bit too bland. The sauces and veggies accompanying different dishes are indistinguishable from each other.

And please, can I have my lunch hot and not lukewarm?    [05 Jul 2005 15:19:29]
