Top: Canada: BC: Summerland Description A historic stone house near Summerland's downtown core forms the heart of this recently refurbished restaurant. The formal yet comfortable atmosphere has been preserved. A large fireplace and high ceiling are main features of the new room and there will often be someone at the piano on the weekends. The menu features many familiar European and Italian items, such as Chicken Florentine and Steak au Poivre. The wine list has an extensive BC section. Frog's legs were tasty as was the saganaki (fried cheese) appetizer. The quality of the meat cuts showed through with the Tournedos Burgundy and the lamb chops. The sauces and the vegetables were a little bit of a let-down, since both were fairly uninteresting. Overall, a most pleasant experience, however. [04 Jan 2001 16:14:38] Talk About Ambiance Disappointed After Recent Revisit Over the last few years we've watched the menu go from a fairly tight and clearly programmed classical French cuisine to a mish-mash of Mediterranean and North American dishes - no doubt by necessity to cater to the diversity of the small client base. However, we generally found the dishes tasty and individually constructed. Not on our last visit, though. A largish party of 7, we ordered everything from lamb to Thai prawns. Unfortunately, every dish came with exactly the same bland accompaniments (turnips, a baseball-sized potato "croquette", broccoli and nebulous red-tinted rice). With dishes as diverse as they were, we felt the sides could have been tailored to each particular dish to complement the meat and the sauce. It got worse. The meats all seemed to have been pre-cooked and quickly micro-waved (the chicken brought back memories of university cafeteria meals). And as a final touch, the sauces were outstanding for their blandness and their common overpowering corn-starchy character. It's too bad, really, as the region needs more good restaurants and this one seems to have regressed to the sort of diner-style fare that is all too common. Perhaps it was due to a stand-in holiday kitchen staff? Let's hope so. [03 Jan 2003 15:42:11] Gift Certificates Sept 2003 Visit Excellent What a Great Place to Eat Wonderful Experience I had a chicken curry dish over rice that was quite mild. My wife had the drunken medallions (pork tenderloin) -- it was fantastic. The prices are reasonable, the service excellent...I think we'll become regular visitors. [04 Mar 2004 12:17:12] A Great Place The prices are low, and the food is definitely aimed at condo owners. The homemade cherry custard ice cream was so good! It finished of the meal on a high note. On this visit we sat in the 'old house' and found the atmosphere wonderful. [29 Aug 2004 18:33:39] A Bit Ho Hum And please, can I have my lunch hot and not lukewarm?
