Great Breakfast When my wife and I drove through from Ontario home to Nova Scotia, our trip to Fred's was always a highlight. No matter what time of day, we always ordered breakfast. It is a great diner-style restaurant, completely casual, completely unpretentious, and very friendly.
The first time we went, I ordered ham and eggs and was blown away by the enormous slab of a pan seared fresh ham steak (not a dried out little circle like most places), the toasted homemade bread (not from a bakery -- someone's grandmother is making this stuff), and the real home fries. With a pitcher of coffee thrown in, we were patrons for life. The service is fast and friendly, and the place is clean and homey. This is comfort food at its very best.
I have only one negative note -- don't order the pancakes if you are used to homemade. They are probably from a mix and have that bland flavour and graininess that characterizes mixes. With so much good stuff on the menu, this shouldn't be a problem. [23 Jan 2004 09:22:28]
