Great Country Kitchen for Very Little Cost
Food - simple foods; sandwiches, chowders, burgers, and some of the best pies in the Maritimes. A good place for breakfast (bacon and egg type fare) or an afternoon snack.

This place smacks of grandma's kitchen. I've had chicken sandwiches, burgers and several of their sandwiches, all are good quality. Prices are very low, with two people having lunch and dessert for under $15 total.

Apples (in season) are free at the counter. I'm fairly certain that this would be the only snack shop in Atlantic Canada that deserves a 'don't-miss-it' label. Oh, and very good milk-shakes too.

The pies - well, the pies are home made and very fresh. Apple crisp, lemon meringue and pumpkin - in season - are excellent. There are many others as well, peach and cherry, etc.

Service - friendly and unhurried. The Sunday-after-mass crowd sometimes fills the place and the newly renovated patio to its brim, but it's rarely a long wait, as most folks are, as the name attests, simply 'snacking'. =)

Ambiance - country kitchen / small-town diner style. Tourists from afar stop by the busload, locals love the place and Haligonians (people from Halifax) often make the hour drive to the little snack-shop that could.

Other - I doubt they take reservations. Open from May though late October (October 27/2002). Best place of its kind in Atlantic Canada. Not a fine dining experience, but a fine diner experience, for sure. And did I mention the amazing pies? =)    [13 Oct 2002 13:44:49]
