Casual upbeat neighbourhood cafe The Bean Bar used to be a butcher shop and latterly a small grocery store. Its small cafe tables are scattered throughout the rectangular room with a service bar in the centre. Sadly, there is TV, unwanted by this reviewer. It lowers its designation as a true cafe for me.
Food is good here at high-end standard cafe level. Lunch is the thing but in the evening the bar is handy for a coffee or tea with a pastry from the array of baked elsewhere "European" style tortes, etc. These are fairly expensive but large enough, generally to share.
Individual pizzas are particularly tasty accompanied by a splotch of interesting greens tastefully dressed. Salads are crisp, fresh and a good bet here. Sandwiches are usually a good choice though I've had a few letdowns. Burgers are good. Dinner is served here but are average to sometimes mediocre. B.B.is a good choice for lunch and after-the-cinema snacks.
Service varies but place is well managed and usually service is intelligent and prompt if sometimes amateurish. [15 Jan 2004 02:04:25]
