Bluenose is a good catch When I want fish and chips, I'm not looking for a fancy-schmancy place. I'm looking for good, basic food - like chips fresh-cut on the premises, fish cooked to order and not just sitting under hot lights, a clean place with friendly people, and reasonable prices.
Bluenose fits the bill precisely by taking thick cuts of halibut, battering them just before deep frying, and serving them with what may be some of the freshest chips in town. There are about 4 of 5 tables in the restaurant, but their bread and butter is definitely their take-out business. Note that portions are generous; if you're used to a 3-piece fish and chips at other places, you may find that two bluenose-sized pieces satisfy you.
The kitchen is in clear view of the cash desk, and is always kept clean and ship-shape.
Momentos from the Bluenose schooner (including an actual spike from the Bluenose 2, removed during a retrofit) adorn the walls; they provide a homey touch, and are a nice diversion while you're waiting for your fish to fry.
They also have shrimp and scallops available, as well as souvlaki, but it's really the halibut which shines.
If you're in a hurry, you can call ahead and they'll have your order ready for pick-up; but for the freshest results, I recommend just coming in and placing your order. [07 Mar 2006 12:50:51]
