China House Never Changes. I am 42 and spent many happy dinner hours as a child at the China House, with my parents and sister. It was not far from where we lived and was the standard place to the grandparents whenever they came to town to visit from Montreal, which was often.
The waiters were always perfectly polite the food exotic, delicious and exactly as expected every time. There was a little bridge you could throw a penny to a fish from at the entranceway, a cool fake tree in the middle of the dining room, white linen table cloths and napkins my Dad would turn into a mouse running up his arm.
Last spring I returned to China House with my sister for the first time in about 30 years. We went to conjure up memories to write the obituary for our 94 year old Nana, the last our our grandparents to go.
China House was frozen in time. The fragrant dishes, patina on the black laquer framed murals and inobtrusive, perfect service from waiters I swear were the older, smaller, greyer versions of the waiters of my childhood.
China House is a lovely, tranquil neghborhood institution with great Cantonese Chinese food and service. A place of memories and always, exactly as expected. [04 Feb 2007 16:59:25]
