Description
The full name is Under the Mango Tree Restaurant, and that's what it is. To reach it, you have to follow the shore road west of the village, then walk through a banana plantation.

Mostly Yummy, Perfect Atmosphere (Under the) Mango Tree (Restaurant): The small sign tacked to a tree is the only indication that the narrow path through a banana plantation leads to a lovely outdoor restaurant. The best thing about the Mango Tree is the surroundings: on a packed-earth bank under a giant mango tree (with a swing!), looking out over the Tungabhadra River. It's a welcome change from the somewhat awful tourist bazaar of Hampi village. Everything is served on large banana leaves. Most of the food is really good: the soup is good, the masala dosas are excellent, and the pancakes, served with honey and topped with fresh fruit, are divine. Really good fresh juice, too. Unfortunately, the "western" options on the menu are less appealing: the scrambled eggs are a crusty mix of egg and questionable vegetable bits and spice, the "pasta" is a similarly flavored mess of wet noodles, and the rice is no better. Service is extremely slow paced, which really isn't that bad in such pleasant surroundings, but it can be annoying when you need more water to handle the spicy food. [10 Mar 2000 19:48:03]

Thali The Mango Tree serves excellent food. I would definietly recommend their Thali dish. The atmosphere is very tranquil throughout the day and night-time the place comes alive with the sound of frogs and crickets chirping. A must to go and visit this place. The staff are also very friendly and helpful and if you can relax on the big swing from one of the Mango tree branches! [08 Nov 2002 09:05:50]

A Chill-Out-Spot A must-see spot thrown in to spectacular relief by the mediocrity that surrounds it. A chill-out-spot par excellence. Visit before all these reviews turn it into a hell hole! Watch yourself, though ... whole days can disappear at this tranquil hidey hole. Okay the service is a tad slow but it's always worth the wait. Generous servings so don't over order.
