Best in town Excellent food. Tried most of the dishes. Freshly prepared and beautifully presented. Chef Julie truly creates some fine dishes as well as some very good home made cakes and desserts. [08 Nov 2005 19:32:14]

Inconsistent Service I must say food is great. Julie may be a great chef but certainly not the best host - if you're not a foreigner. Locals are treated quite differently, those in the high society may get special treatment, if your not part of them your complaints will likely be ignored. Unbelievable but true!!!! Service and Food not up to expectation The service and food wasn't up to my expectation. They said that the food there is good but I don't think so. The food wasn't consistent and doesn't have taste. I had to add my own salt and pepper and on top of that when requested for an explanation the staff just ignored me and gave me his ignorant face. On top of that I heard from my friends that if you ain't a VIP or a regular, you don't get such good service and I agree it's true. The service I got was bad. Maybe because I ain't such an important customer and not a regular, been there twice only. But with this visit, now I am in doubt whether to indulge there again. [16 Jul 2006 12:18:44]

Indulgence isn't what many people says I went there with my family last weekend and I must say what many told me about the place is partially true. For one thing, the service is bad, I think there are short of staff and the food isn't that tasty like what I would have expected from a well-known place like that. We ordered a pizza - Bugsy, pastas - carbonara, jilly's joke, rib eye steak and also the salad with lamb and haloumi cheese and it wasn't that well cooked. For one thing the steak was overdone, I ordered medium and the pastas lack of taste. My kids' pizza was burnt at the corners. [17 Jul 2006 06:09:34]

Disappointing After all the hype, I drove all the way to Ipoh from KL just to see what it was all about. Seeing pictures of Julie with Shannon Bennett and Tetsuya, I must say that I was pretty much looking forward to an excellent meal.
Unfortunately, my illusions were shattered the moment I looked into the menu. Dishes were "dumbed" down with names like "Squidgy" and "The Fluffy". Instead of a few specialized dishes which rotate every so often, Indulgence has decided to offer a huge variety of mediocre dishes. Variety is always good, but not if it affect the quality of the food. I would rather have less variety but top quality food.
My main dish came 15 minutes earlier than everyone else, while I was STILL halfway through my starter.
I ordered an asparagus soup and it came so heavily peppered that I had to down a few glasses of water just to get through it. A friend had an aglio olio seafood pasta which came out literally swimming in a way too huge pool of olive oil. Chicken sausage pasta came out too salty. Lamb shank on pasta was very normal.
Generally the food was edible, but I don't think it was anything to shout about. Definitely not worth the 2 hours drive. [16 Aug 2007 04:21:41]

Terrible food After hearing all the fuss about this great place to eat, my pals and I drove all the way down to Ipoh to test out this so called supposedly good place, but to our surprise the food was lousy. The pasta we ordered, seafood on olive oil base, was too salty, and the rib eye we ordered was over-cooked, we ordered medium but was nearly well done! On top of that, the mushroom soup we ordered was tasteless... I would say going to KL restaurants are still better... certainly not worth the 2 hour drive [08 Sep 2007 10:31:07]

Too Pricey! Price of the food was on the high side. The pasta was too salty, nothing to shout about actually. Just waste of time going there. Much more better restaurants that serves pasta compared to Indulgence. Very disappointing! [12 Dec 2007 08:55:26]

Seriously Average The food is average compared to international standards and the cost is high. I can forgive that, but what i can't forgive is the service and attitude of staff.
My first experience of poor service was on one afternoon when i decided to stop by and take away some desserts. I stood by the dessert counter for 10 minutes before a lady came out and finally asked if she could help. In the time I was waiting, I saw a young man who appeared to be a supervisor (sous-chef?) give another waitress a terrible scolding. Right in front of me! It was because she couldn't pronounce the name of a dish correctly. Note to sous-chef, classy food / restaurant does not mean attitude! And definitely not in front of customers.
The second occasion where i witnessed poor service was on one dine-in occasion. Staff thought they could speak better English than most customers so often spoke down to customers (probably a knock on effect of the sous-chef above!). Note to staff at Indulgence, trust me, you don't speak better English and you probably haven't been to France so please don't act like you know more about good food etiquette than the customers. On that night, we did spend about RM2000 between 3 people (yes, it was a celebration so we had Kobe steak and lots of wine!) so the Chef decided to come out. Her visit felt laborious and obligatory. Note to chef, if you don't really want to come and speak to your customers, then don't.
I have eaten at many world class restaurants around the world - Regis Marcon, Tetsuya etc., while it is true the food is far better at these places than at Indulgence, they also serve the dishes with no attitude.
Recommendation to Indulgence - if you want an example of great culinary service in Malaysia, visit Lafite in the Shangri-La, KL. Their service will humble you. [16 Nov 2008 23:46:06]
