Charm of Soviet era If a restaurant is a public eatery you can rely on to be open every evening and serve reasonably edible food, Podlasianka is not a restaurant. This place opens for lunch only. Quite often it is closed for private functions without much warning-usually a hand-written note on the window. It does not open on weekday evenings. At weekends it is almost invariably booked for wedding parties. The food is very cheap and mediocre. Lunch costs about $1.50, and comprises a reasonably good soup, mashed potato(always) and "compote", a sugary warm fruit drink. Podlasianka has all the charm of a Soviet era venereal disease clinic, although service is surprisingly efficient and friendly. The waiting staff are attentive, clean and tidy. [28 Aug 2003 02:44:47]
