An old favourite Caru cu Bere (The Beer Cart) has survived wars, communism, and hordes of tourists. A pretty place in the heart of Bucharest's old section, around the corner from the National History Museum. Food is good enough, service so-so, and the no-smoking policy is rarely enforced. Businessmen and tourists like the Gypsy and folkloric shows here. Watch out for overcharging. Locals enjoy this place too, and it can get pretty crowded at night. Worth going to at least once, to say you've been there and to enjoy the intricate wood-carved interior. [14 Jan 2000 15:46:47]

What a Rip-Off Yes, the building is beautiful and historic. The food is not too bad either. Service is surly, and they have a "we are doing you a favor serving you" attitude. And of course, they rip you off too. Conveniently, when I was there, they were not serving from the menu. Only thing that was avaialble were platters, which they happened to add $40 worth of caviar to, without my knowledge. On top of all this, they argued about taking a credit card (which we were forced to use since the bill was triple what we expected). I would never go back given the poor service and overcharging, but I am glad I can say I have been there. [29 Oct 2002 06:57:28]
