Best Italian in the Caribbean After living in Trinidad, Il Colosseo is easily the best Italian food I have ever had. Eating Italian in the US simply does not compare, whether it's Chicago, New York, or elsewhere. My wife, having visited and dined in Italy, says that Il Colosseo is better than the native food she ate on her trip.
Everything I have ever tried has been delicious. The flavor is perfect, the temperature is ideal, and the presentation is nice. Texture, of course, varies from person to person, but I did not have any dish that was incompatible with my texture preferences.
The price is out of range for the average Trinidadian, but quite affordable for visitors and ex-pats seeking a high-quality meal. The service is courteous and professional, but sometimes lacks in promptness, a characteristic manifested throughout the island as part of the laid-back Caribbean attitude.
The restaurant itself is inside an old colonial-times house, but still provides ample seating for large parties. Dim, but not dark, lighting adds intimacy to the dining experience. Occasional live music enhances the overall ambiance. The hard wood floors can be a bit distracting as patrons move about the restaurant, but certainly a minor problem.
Parking can be a bit tricky, as Rust Street is rather narrow, and walking at night in Port of Spain is not recommended.
While rarely crowded, it is best to make reservations, especially for parties larger than four or five.
The wine selection is satisfactory, given the Caribbean location; there are a variety of wines from France, Italy, US, and Chile. The fully-stocked bar features an excellent selection of scotch, brandy, and rum along with the other standard liquors.

GREAT food! Great ambiance and reasonable prices too! It's all good. I've been there several times on all days of the week and it's always full. When very full the volume of voices can be a little annoying due to the echoing off the tiles, but even then it's still OK to talk to the people at your table. Service is very prompt, very professional (unusual for here!), the restaurant is very clean and the food tastes fantastic. I've tried almost all dishes and they are all good. I'd recommend this to anyone. [15 May 2006 20:27:17]
