Fantastic!
Anthem is a fantastic dining experience.
The food was fantastic with a mixture of dishes from different continents with one thing in common they were all fantastically fresh and executed.
The service was informal, in complete contrast to a really intimate and ambient atmosphere.

Gob Smakkingly Delicious
Anthem is a well managed restaurant on St. Michaels Hill in Bristol positioned inside an antique Georgian house. With excellent dishes which range from all continents including exotic dishes like chilli chocolate eclairs which are eclairs filled with vegetable covered in a chocolate chili sauce.    [02 Mar 2006 15:31:12]

Good food but rough edges slightly spoilt experience
Anthem's menu offers a eclectic range of tempting and unusual dishes. After some mental anguish I opted for a starter of lamb stuffed jalapenos and a main of spinach and feta filo pastry gateaux. Neither course turned up as I expected but both lived up to my initial expectation. The flavour of the spinach and feta pastry was particularly good. The presentation, whilst not as inspiring as the food, was acceptable as were the portion sizes. However I personally dislike the practice of providing one large bowl of vegetables to be shared between diners and felt they could have been a little more generous with these.

Although the restaurant was quite quiet I did feel that perhaps the one waitress had a little too much to do. Our plates could have been cleared faster and she made good use of short-cuts between alcoves to get drinks to us which, whilst showing initiative, was perhaps a little unconventional. The table was fairly cluttered and clearing away the wine glasses (as none of us were drinking) would have helped. Our only problem with the food/drink was quickly addressed with no fuss. Certainly we were allowed to eat at our own pace and were not rushed at all.

The restaurant itself is quite unusual. Obviously not designed as a restaurant, it consists of a number of smallish rooms with alcoves and passages. It could be intimate but it could also end up crowded and annoying. Our table was clean with fresh flowers and a lit candle. We were not really disturbed by the tables around us and the music was pleasant and never intrusive. The restaurant is non-smoking throughout.

I had high hopes of Anthem having read other reviews and in some ways I was not disappointed. The menu is not run-of-the-mill and the flavours were as promised. Having said that I don't think the food was outstanding value - 14 pounds for a vegetarian main with shared vegetables seems quite steep. Others in my party were less impressed with the taste and design of their food. Small things, such as rather tatty looking menus, also let the place down a little.    [06 May 2006 08:18:59]

Love it
I have eaten here 3 times and have never been disappointed. Maybe their puddings could do with a bit more work - a little uninspiring, but I'm not a big pudding fan so no problem there! I thought it was ok value for money too. My husband and I had 3 courses each and 2 bottles of wine and the bill was £66 which I think is quite reasonable. My husband had rack of lamb last time which was very very rare but was taken back with no face oulling or ill feeling.    [02 Dec 2007 13:31:40]
