Description

It was an inspired idea: take over a striking, yet neglected, listed Victorian railway shed & turn it into the first full-time farmer’s market in the country. Team that with an in-house restaurant whose chef buys all his ingredients from the butchers, bakers & farmers selling in the market, make sure the food is neither frilly nor fancy, &, hey-presto, you have a sure-fire winner. The Goods Shed is a casual space of exposed brickwork & massive windows soaring up to exposed rafters. Breakfast is served from 8-10.30am. You pay a £2 cover charge, then each item (from a list that includes free-range eggs, sausage, bacon, bubble & squeak, toast) is 50p. For lunch & dinner, expect ingredient-led dishes such as cauliflower & rosemary soup, organic pot-roast chicken or lemon sole with wild garlic butter, with orange & almond torte with orange syrup & lavender ice cream for afters.

Exceptional quality
It's the outstanding quality of the ingredients that makes the Goods Shed stand out. Everything is sourced locally, mostly from the farmers' market in the building. This means that there is no set menu, it changes each day depending on what's available and of best quality and you order from the blackboard behind the bar. The cooking is in every respect up to the quality of the produce. On a recent visit I had a rib-eye steak with garlic which was one of the best meals I've ever had. The drinks menu is equally good. Just the house wines are highly recommended, and you cannot miss the delicious home-made fruit juice mixtures that they offer. The relatively small size of the restaurant means that the service is always good, and the atmosphere is relaxed, unpretentious and friendly. For the quality of the food on offer, it's very good value for money.    [01 May 2006 14:27:24]
