Give This One A Miss.
Extremely disappointed. Has all the pretence of something special but missing one important factor, the ability to prepare good meals and make the customer feel relaxed.
We knew we were on to a loser as soon as the requested very dry vodka martini arrived - a tumbler with 1 shot of vodka, 2 shots martini, ice & lemon.
Onward to the dining area, all the covers had the same Villeroy & Boch plates on the table mats, which are removed as you sit and never seen again - quaint!
The starters; scallops risotto, totally overpowered the subtley of the scallop by the mass of flavours from too many other ingredients, including sweetcorn. A paté de fois gras normally stands up by itself, once again too much other stuff kills it - shut one's eyes and you'd never guess what you were eating.

The mains; poor quality, old and tired sea bass, (suspect frozen) and again the dish was inundated with too many other flavours - I was left wondering, what are they trying to hide? The guinea fowl - dry, tough and, yes you've guessed it, hidden by the mass of obstructing flavours, which in this case may have been a saving grace. The accompanying vegetables were inconsequential, as were the desserts and cheese, although looking inviting on the menu, the reality was disappointing. As I commented to the hostess - London prices similar to Rules, Zillis & Cafe du Marche (particular favourites of mine) but nowhere near the quality of food or abilitly of preparation & delivery.

I suggest you give this one a miss.    [28 Apr 2007 04:48:24]

Very disappointing!
We went to the hungry monk for the first time in 2000, for our first wedding anniversary, it was fantastic! we had a private dining room and the food and service were great.
We decided to go again in november for our 7th wedding anniversary this time the experience was totally different. The service was diabolical, the restaurant was freezing cold, and the food was poor.
For the money that they charge you'd expect them to make alot more effort to ensure customer satisfaction, we politely complained about the poor service and food and were met with indifference.
I would not recomment this restaurant to anyone and will certainly not be returning!    [06 May 2007 08:01:55]
