A quiet Monday evening in Reading. The evening was a wet one and the atmosphere in Forburys was warm and welcoming. The restaurant was quiet but the relaxing seating area by the bar provided a few minutes to take in the menu and decide on what to order.
Between us we had main courses and desserts. The Posh Fish and chips with puree peas was crisp, fresh and the chips a delight. Crisp and warm with a hint of salt and light and fluffy on the inside. The Haddock and egg on rissoto looked tasty if a bit one colour. The Roast Pheasant with white pudding and apple had flavour, and texture but the meat was on the dry side.
Desserts were impressively presented on large glass plates or a white square plate. The lemon tart and pistachio ice cream was delightful, the bitter chocolate was smooth and had a bite. The parsnip ice cream went with the chocolate perfectly. The lavender pannacotta with figs was smooth but the hint of lavender was too much of a hint. The sweetness of the figs did not complement the pannacotta sufficiently.
Having said all of that for a first visit I was impressed at the environment and the service. They did not crowd the party and only interrupted to serve or remove empty plates. They kept a good eye on us. However there was only six people in the restaurant and I wonder how good the service is on a busy Friday or Saturday night. [25 Oct 2005 10:04:47]
