Decent Food But Watch The Waiter. On an overcast and windy june afternoon, myself and two additional members of my party decided to take a chance on dining at The Old Thatched Cottage on weston super mares sea front.
We was greeted by a somewhat over friendly waiter from wales who duly seated us in the middle of two other tables which were taken by other diners, personally I like a bit more privacy for myself and for strangers I don't know, especially as there was ample seating around the restaurant.
A Cod Special was on the menu priced at £6.50 p.p I usually steer clear of these specials but decided to try it here as I was promised by the waiter that everything was not frozen and all was fresh, as the sign stated outside, so 2 specials on order and a mushroom omelette making up the third meal at a cost of £5.50.
15 Minutes had passed and the food was served on the table, first impressions looked good with large plates to feast your eyes on it. The meals come piping hot and was well presented, but sadly the fish was fresh but was somehow lacking in taste it just seemed to be missing something, the addition of a few hard crunchy frozen chips somewhat let down what could have been a better meal. On to the omelette with mushroom, same again served hot, and looked good enough to eat, served with 4 large new potatoes and so many peas it looked as though there was 2 tins worth on the plate, but no additional garnish, or a bit of salad dressing would have filled the plate better than all of those peas, but the thumbs up was given to that meal nevertheless. A slice of bread and butter was asked for but was told only rolls was on offer, so one was ordered but 2 arrived practically being forced upon us by the now annoying waiter who was very much pushy and too much in your face type of person, where glances were made from all over the other tables making the visit more embarrasing for all. Two drinks plus a glass of water pushed the total bill to £23.50 as was worked out between the three of us, inc 90p for two rolls where only one was ordered, the waiter then finished his shift as we ordered the bill as we didnt want to endure a sweet in his company and was then horrified to read the bill as £36.85 how can anyone make such a mistake as that, we only could laugh in disbelief, which this matter was brought to the attention of the person taking over the duty. It was sorted out with the minimum of fuss but I walked out of the restaurant feeling badly let down and insulted just by one person and a so called scam ripping off their own customers. It made me realise that, is that why the restaurant only had 12 diners compared to a full restaurant less than 100 yards away. A clean and tidy intimate restaurant in an ideal location, small but clean toilet, and generally decent food but would only give this establishment 5/10. [16 Jun 2005 07:57:40]
