Description

This small but perfectly formed tapas bar is a branching out for the owners of Williams & Brown deli further along Harbour Street. Cooking is a serious matter with all ingredients caringly sourced, & like the bare-bones minimalist décor, simplicity is the virtue of classic dishes such as deep-fried whitebait with aioli & deep-fried squid dusted with paprika flour. For every familiar dish you order, it’s well worth seeking out one of the unusual specials: for example, try scallops with ham & chilli, or new season lamb & lentil salad to have alongside chorizo in cider & patatas bravas. The carefully chosen wine list is a rewarding foray, hitting well beyond the expected Rioja & Cava

GREAT TO FIND TAPAS IN WHITSTABLE
When visiting Whitstable we expected to lunch on the usual oysters or prawns, but opted instead to try the Tapas restaurant. Great choice, each tapas was yummy, particularly the Catalan Honeyed Chicken and the Scallops with Jamon. The service was friendly and helpful and it has a laid back atmosphere. Would highly recommend it.    [10 Apr 2006 08:55:04]

Terrible tapas!
The dreadful thought of travelling home last week on a busy commuter route was at least eased by the tantalising prospect of authentic tapas at Williams and Brown of Whitstable. Though after an arduous journey, when greeted by an over-zealous Italian my heart immediately sank; worse still, my temporary depression was confounded to near suicide over the course of the evening.
As our waitress casually filed her chorizo-coloured nails in the prep area of the kitchen, I prepared to study the wine list. Having drawn breath I was ready to wade through alcoholic waters- having exhaled I was finished; such a large selection of tapas cannot normally be complemented by only rioja or house plonk I thought. As I tasted the faux-gatronomy however, after its brief spell under the salamander, I may have found an exception.
Minimalist decor and Catalonian-styled seating are a plus, but are no compensation for a disappointing meal. Over-cooked scallops with over-cooked jamon sat next to adjacent terracottas of burnt chorizo braised in cider, and sweet ribs, again over-cooked as if the chef had an aversion to tender food. At around seven fifty a pop one could do better at home, or round the corner with fresh oysters.
It seems that a praising review by a broadsheet a few years back has propelled W+B into a lax state, a fatal error for any business. Imaginative culinary ideas inconsistently executed are just that- good ideas- which coincidently summarises by recent tapas experience.    [10 Jan 2007 18:25:43]

Lucky Whistable!
One of the best restaurants i have ever visited in England! As a visitor in December i was quite surprised to come across the Williams and Brown Tapas Bar- i mean there are few places serving Champagne by the glass!!! The morcilla and chickpeas with sultanas and pine nuts has to be tried for yourself and the Jamon Serrano is of a very high quality. Perfect place to take friends for a relaxed evening.    [19 Jan 2007 07:52:36]
