Plunked in the middle of yet another nondescript strip mall on the Chandler/Tempe border, ZakeE doesn't inspire much Middle Eastern charm in its decor. - Phoenix New Times, Carey Sweet, 3 August 2000; Review - suggest change

Beyond incredible Unbelievably, wonderfully, delicious and authentic food. The Babbaghanouj is to *die* for...try it inside a warmed pita with a big spoonful of lentils and rice. It is their standout dish, which can be ordered a la carte or as a meal special with a tiny salad.
High quality ingredients scrupulously prepared with great touches--extra virgin olive oil, chopped fresh herbs, and GARLIC. Make sure everyone in your department/office/household has some of whatever you eat, because you'll likely give off the "Vitamin G" garlic vibes for hours. But it is so worth it.
The shwarmas (gyros by another name) are tasty and the meat is fresh grilled before your eyes. Everything is made to order--potentially the only complaint is the time it takes during the lunch rush to get your custom-made order. But this is totally worth it, and if your boss is a timecard nazi you can call the order in and pick up later.
Please give this wonderful casual restaurant a try. The hours (and spartan decor) are more friendly to the workers from the local cube farm than a couple looking for a romantic dinner, but with food this good it really doesn't matter.
For the total buzzkills in your group, there are "American" offerings like Philly Cheesesteaks and hamburgers--but WHY? Why would anyone do that...? Still, the option is there, and I'm told the sandwiches are very good as well. I always go straight for the Babbaghanouj.
IMO, the food is MUCH better than the Israeli place Sabuddy's on University in Tempe--slightly different menu offerings, but same general cuisine. Zakee's is so much better--less heavy and greasy, more garlic and other subtle flavors. [30 Sep 2005 04:29:10]
