Inexpensive, nice atmosphere and fun We've gone several times with the family to this particular 5 and Diner. Its location near the Loop 101 Pima Freeway makes it convenient when a nice lunch with the kids.
The atmosphere is one of a '50s-era railcar diner, with mostly booths seating between 2 and 8. The wait staff is friendly and generally knowledgeable. The place is usually pretty packed, meaning getting a seat right away is no guarantee. The waiting area is crowded but suitable, until the lines out the door mean people are basically standing on you in line!
Service is medium to slow, depending on the crowd, but has never been what I'd characterize as "fast" or "very attentive." The orders are normally correct and complete, though you may need a refill on a drink by the time it arrives. Shakes are creamy and fresh, with no artificialness to their flavor.
Salads are very nice, with an ample serving. A plentiful selection of sandwiches means everyone should find something they like, though the kids' menu is typical uninteresting fare. (I usually feel very bad for my pre-teens at most restaurants.)
Desserts are acceptable if unimaginative, and not made on site (other than assembly of ice cream deserts and shakes).
The bill arrives at the right time at the table but usually takes a while to leave for processing. The kids get crayons and some not-too-bad activities on their placemats, as well as diner-hats (look like enlisted military hats) to draw on and keep. It's a good place for kids, with nice old-time music, a friendly staff, a varied enough menu to satisfy most tastes and reasonable prices. [17 Jun 2003 12:44:25]
