Quite a nice place for lunch. On a recent Friday, we happened to be strolling around downtown Tucson--following "The Presidio Trail," a historical walking tour of the downtown area which is quite interesting and easy to do, since one only needs to follow the painted line on the streets--when we decided to stop in for lunch.
I had been wanting to stop in Cafe 54 since I had read about it about a year ago in the paper, and thought it would be good to show my support.
Inside, one orders at the counter from a menu on a whiteboard, and your food is brought out. I suspect that the dishes change daily, or at least on a regular schedule. From a selection of about 12 to 15 items, one of us chose the marinated tofu with jasmine rice, the other chose the cheesy mostacolli and salad (If you read our other reviews, we're vegetarians).
No sooner than we sat down, someone came by with fresh rosmary rolls and an extra plate for oil and balsimic vineger. The rolls were quit good, light, and warm.
After finishing the rolls, we took a quick look at the artwork on the walls--some of it was very good.
Soon after, our lunches arrived. The marinated tofu, while good, was a bit on the salty side. The jasmine rice, on the other hand, was perfect, and the portion of mostacolli also was quite cheesy and tasty.
Part way through lunch, we were served another set of rolls, to help sop up the remaining bits of sauce, and we didn't even have to ask. [18 Feb 2006 17:21:07]
