Finally, a decent Italian restaurant On a recent Thursday, we wandered by the Caffe Milano and noticed they were open for dinner. Normally only open for lunch, they had opened in the evenings during the annual gem show because of the added traffic. Not wanting to pass by an opportunity to try a new (to us) restaurant we stopped in.
The place was lively, but we were seated immediately and offered menus. Looking them over, we choose the two meatless choices: The gnocchi in tomato basil sauce, the other selected the quatro formaggio orecchiette. While the gnocchi was quite good, and obviously made in the restaurant, the quatro formaggio orecchiette was outstanding.
For those that don't know -- we didn't so we asked -- orecchiette means "little ear" in Italian. So it's a pasta shaped somewhat like a small ear. But it was the sauce that won us over; the quattro formaggio was wonderful, light but filled with cheese flavor. This was truly some of the best Italian food we've had, and easily the best we've found in Tucson.
Not wanting to pass up up the opportunity for an equally good desert, we both ordered the tiramisu. It was the real deal, made with marscapone cheese (not whipped creme some other places use), light, fluffy, just so good. Well worth it.
So if you want great Italian food, make sure to check out Caffe Milano. Right now they are mainly open for lunch, but they may start opening up on Thursday and Friday evenings. [19 Feb 2006 12:17:08]
