Description

Yoshimi Tashima, a former Tokyo fashion designer, had a wake-up call in the form of a bout with cancer, and became a health nut. The result: Yoshimatsu, a relaxed, cafeteria-style eatery combining the traditional with the kawaii and serving up authentic versions of Japanese street and comfort food like donburi (rice bowls), miso soup, curries, okonomiyaki (a sort of omlet or pancake), noodles, and a wide assortment of bento (mixed dinner boxes). The emphasis is on health and nutrition; nothing is greasy, the merits of tofu, seaweed, and mushrooms are played up, brown rice is offered, and (for what it's worth) Yoshimatsu only uses organically grown ingredients, yet the dishes are (by all accounts) traditional homestyle fare.

Yoshimatsu suffers from its success more than anything--the response has been overwhelmingly positive. Expect lines and, as the sign warns, difficulty finding seating at peak times.

An assortment of teas (including matcha), health-drinks, beers, and sakés are offered, as well as desert items including. A small gift-shop offers Japanese health and fad food as well as Japanese toys and various kawaii (cutesy) items.

Nota bene: Yoshimatsu is not a sushi or a sashimi restaurant, which has confused some people new to Japanese cuisine.

Yummy!
This healthy alternative to the every day american meal is a treat, both in taste and culture. This restaurant could be considered a semi-fast food Japanese establishment in that it is set up alot like "Beyond Bread". You pay for your food, get a number, and find a table.    [24 May 2005 14:19:59]

The restaurant we miss most since we moved to NM
We ate there at least 2x a week when we lived in Tucson. It was a great place to meet with coworkers and friends. Being non-meat eaters, we loved the extensive vegetarian selections. We've lived in NM for several years now and are still hoping they'll somehow open a branch in NM or FedEx some food to us.    [27 May 2006 17:25:53]

Cool place.
As a couple of Nipponophiles, we enjoy the small, cozy setting and the cool toys displayed throughout the restaurant. The food is always exxxcellent, very fresh. Gonna try some okonomiyaki next time we go.    [02 May 2007 15:26:27]

Recommended Dishes: Bento lunch box. A variety of not-so scary dishes for the new Japanese food eater to try.
