Chinese Chicken Salad I've been to many restaurants in a quest to find the best Chinese chicken salad. The Agoura Deli has the best by far. Only order the lunch portion since all meals are served with ample portions of food. Have the chicken grilled and order an extra sourdough roll. They make their own dressing and it's wonderful. We went to Agoura Deli and had a miserable dining experience. I've heard that this is one of the better restaurants in Agoura. I took my girlfriend there for a late brunch on a Saturday afternoon - we will never return!
It took 15 minutes for the waitress to make her first appearance at our table. I ordered the "skirt steak with eggs", steak medium rare, eggs over-medium, home fried potatoes, and rye toast - buttered. My girlfriend ordered eggs with hotcakes (sorry, I don’t recall how it was listed on the menu.), ordering the eggs over-medium. We both ordered coffee.
The food and coffee arrived about 10 minutes later (fine for the food, but terribly long for coffee) and everything except the pancakes were cooked wrong! My girlfriend’s eggs were nearly raw – you could separate the raw top half by sliding a fork across the top and sweeping half of the eggs away. My steak was mostly black on the outside and gray inside, and as I cut it, it was tough as leather. We were very hungry, so we decided to eat something before sending back the mis-prepared food. My girlfriend was lucky – her pancakes were edible. I tried to eat my eggs but they were burned – the bottom was scorched brown and hard like plastic, the yolks were completely hard. Next, I turned to the home fried potatoes – they were undercooked: the potatoes crunched like sliced apples in my mouth. Determined to eat something before sending my order back, I bit into my “rye toast – buttered” only to be disappointed by the revolting taste of burned toast (unbuttered). I was surprised because the toast looked perfect on my plate, but when I separated the halves I found that 3/4 of the inside was burned black! I haven’t seen that particular “dirty trick” in some time – serving charred toast with the black sides facing in – in hopes that the customer won’t notice that it’s burned.
I tried to flag down our waitress – she motioned with her hand like she was busy. After waiting about 5 minutes, she came to our table. I showed her everything that was wrong with our food – she said nothing and started taking our plates back. My girlfriend was about half way through eating her pancakes and asked that she be able to finish her pancakes on another plate: the waitress looked like she was losing her patience with us (Come-on! We’re the ones getting a raw deal.). She gruffly said: “I can’t do that, honey! I have to the whole plate back!) We reluctantly agreed, but we stopped her as she was taking our breakfast away to ask that she refill our empty coffee cups and bring each of us a glass of water. She returned a minute later with coffee and water.
The manager came to our table about 5 minutes later with our plates - the food had not been touched! She introduced herself as Yolanda and asked us “what the problem was”. We showed her the raw eggs, the burned eggs, the burned steak, and the burned toast. She argued every point – telling us that all eggs will have a little bit of gooey egg white, and all eggs will have a little bit of the white singed brown. I replied that we had both ordered eggs over-medium and demonstrated the difference in egg whites and yolks between our plates, and asked her how come one came out raw and the other scorched. She said that we were being “overly picky” and that our meals were fine. I then showed her the steak and the toast – she replied that our “food was cooked just like everyone else’s” and that I “could probably find fault in anything”. I couldn’t believe her audacity!
I got up to leave and told her that we would only pay for the coffee and pancakes. When we got to the counter, she said, “Wait a minute” and disappeared into the backroom. The owner came out a minute later. He introduced himself as Dave, and asked us what he could do for us. I tried to escort him back to the table to show him our food, but the table had already been cleared (but not cleaned!). I told him about the poor quality of food and service – he replied that I “should have asked to see [him] while we were still at the table, with our plates there”. I told him that his manager had already come to see us, and that she just made excuses and was incredibly rude. He said, “Look, I’ve got 650 customers here on the weekend – nobody complains.” I replied, “you’re wrong, you only have 648.”
He refused to remove the inedible food from the bill because he “didn’t see it for [himself]”. I told him that I have never been treated so badly, and that I refused to pay for anything that was not to our satisfaction. He replied that he would have to call the sheriff. I simply could not believe these jerks; I wanted to pinch myself to see if it was all a nightmare. I paid by credit card and contested the charge when I got home. [06 Nov 2003 03:19:57]

Regular Customer I have to say that I think that the food and service at the Deli is great. I've never had a problem like the one described below- and I go there once or twice a month. The Greek salad is great, and the menu is extensive and well-prepared. I have to say that sometimes service gets a little slow when it's busy, but other than that, it's a great place to eat! Service Was Wonderful The service was wonderful. Our server was very professional and had a very warm and comforting sweetness about her. The meal was to die for. The chicken and the vegetables were cooked to perfection. I plan on eating there a lot more.
I wanted to give my compliments to the owner. The cashier couldn't give me the time of day when I asked them to point out the owner to me. The cashier's name was Linda, I believe. Linda pointed into the crowded deli as she said "he is at one of those tables somewhere, good luck." Instead I thanked the cooks. My server approached me, said good-bye and thanked me again. She gave me another sweet smile. I asked her name. "Anna" she said. I mentioned to Anna that her smile lit the room and was there something she could do to get the other employees to smile. I will return with my family and friends. [18 Sep 2004 06:10:47]

Great Place My husband and I eat at Agoura Deli at least 2 times a month since we found it, approx 5 mo. ago. We've always had wonderful servers and the food has always been prepared to our liking and we almost always have such large portions that we have leftovers for at least a couple lunches for the following few days. We usually get chicken, turkey or beef dishes with vegetables that are have not been frozen.
Our only negative I can recall is a table towards the front of the restaurant in the far corner from the entrance had a cool breeze that was annoying. We just avoid that table. [07 Jan 2006 22:30:45]

Bad Service I have been a local return customer to the Agoura Deli. Not anymore! The hostess plain told me that because I was single I could not have a booth and that was what her manager had instructed her to do. I then had to sit at a wobbly table and wait for the food. The chicken salad was burnt and the waitresses all don't care. Too bad they didn't keep the old staff. There were 4 booths open that day, but I had to be seated at a table. That was bad. Rude Service- Good Food The food is always great, it is just the servers. They are always so rude and slow. They take a long time to respond and do not ever come back for refills. All they care about is getting you in and out so they can collect their tips. [13 Dec 2006 16:23:54]

great food, great service The Chinese Chicken salad with grilled chicken is the best in the San Fernando and Conejo valleys.
The Mexican food is better than most Mexican restaurants in the area, and the breakfasts are cheap and delicious.
The only down side is that there is just one bathroom stall for each. The owners could be a bit more present, and friendly. [22 Jan 2007 01:51:50]

Definitely NOT best Chinese Chicken Salad Just had the Chinese Chicken salad and I thought it was average at best; I don't recommend it. The matzo ball soup, however, is fabulous! [25 Jun 2007 23:43:19]
