Breathtaking Views Just south of Big Sur on Highway 1 is Nepenthe. This restaurant has amazing views of the Ocean and coast. There is a large number of outdoor seating, all with views.
I just stopped for a quick bike on my way up HW 1, so I only sample had some soup and a sandwich. The soup (lentle) was excellent as well as vegetarian. The "burger" was amazing, a very soft French bread, a delicate beef patty, cheese, and their ambrosia sauce. One of the best burgers ever.
Service was excellent. [10 Jul 2000 16:27:26]

Overrated Nepenthe trades on its unique and fantastic location - high on a bluff overlooking the surf at Big Sur. But while the prices reflect the quality of the view, the quality of the food doesn't match either. Average food at double the prices for comparable quality elsewhere. [16 Jul 2001 18:22:55]

The Place to Dine in Big Sur. I live in Indiana, but I travel the west every summer by motorcycle and the ride down Highway 1 through Big Sur is always part of my agenda. I absolutely cannot ride past Nepenthe without stopping - for brunch at the Cafe Kevah or lunch or dinner up in the main restaurant. I can't say enough about the ambiance - it's a magical place perched between coastal mountain peaks and the Pacific Ocean. I concede that the food is a bit pricey, but it's good and never disappoints. This is my favorite restaurant in the entire world! [28 Nov 2003 17:07:38]
