Fresh, Tasty - Limited Menu
The fish is indisputably fresh - with a location next to a harbor, they do have an advantage, and they make the most of it. Portions are generous, and service is attentive. Weak point is the maki menu. There is a limited number of rolls and none of the menues explain what is in each roll. Plus there is only one vegetarian roll and it's very unimaginative. They have a large customer base now (there's a waiting line at the door almost every night) and they could experiment with new maki combinations. An explanation of what's in the roll would really help the customers and help Gen Kai to sell more sushi! If they had more variety, I'd be there every week. As it is, I go elsewhere when I want ingenuity and vegetarian rolls.    [30 Apr 2004 12:55:51]

Gen Kai was the best sushi ever, I've been going 15 years. Also lived in Japan 2 years. New owner within the last 6 months. (Korean, no longer Japanese) All the old time chefs left because new owner taking shortcuts. Fish quality went down.(Salmon is mushy) The chefs no longer have fun, it used to be a party with outstanding sushi. Too bad but all good things come to an end. It want be long before it's an "all you can it joint." Good Bye Gen Kai! We will miss you.    [10 Mar 2007 23:39:21]
