Undercooked Tempura Veggies Knowing that there are several highly rated restaurants that serve "Japanese" food in Elk Grove, I was just exploring what was available. With the Mikuni just down the street, I was looking for another one that I had seen on the internet, but for lack of time I stumbled on the Shogun Sushi. No elegance or warmth greeted me as I entered, I was seated behind the sushi bar on a table that really needed cleaning, not just a wiping. I was asked if I wanted to order even before opening the menu. I chose the Caterpillar Roll from the sushi bar and the seafood tempura from the menu. The roll was excellent, a tasty combination of avocado, unagi and crab. The wasabi was rather weak, lacking its usual aromatic punch. I waited a long time for my tempura, however I was somewhat disappointed with the outcome. The tempura batter was not completely cooked on the broccoli, and rather doughy, the same with the carrot. The fish and prawns were ok as were the sweet potato and the zucchini. I mentioned it to my waitress, she said she was sorry and shrugged it off, I didn't pursue it further. For one person, I felt that it was a fairly high price to pay for what I got, 2 prawns and two pieces of fish. I don't dine in Elk Grove often, but in the future I will avoid the Shogun and try another establishment. $26 with tip for only two items, normally I would have order additional sushi. My baseline restaurant is the Zen Taro. [24 Sep 2006 23:22:24]

Pleased!! My boyfriend and I went to Shogun Sushi today and had their all you can eat sushi roll weekend special. We sat at the Sushi bar and were treated extremely well. The Sushi chef was friendly and prompt. At four rolls split between my boyfriend and me, we definitely had enough to eat. The Sushi chef was accommodating and kind. We will definitely be back... Great Place to Go People don't understand - this place is not meant to be the equal to the huge corporatized sushi establishments. This place is a small, intimate setting - they don't exactly have a Wal-Mart-style greeter standing at the door, but once you've been there more than once, the sushi chef begins to know your name and your normal orders.
I go in, and he makes me my favorite without me even having to ask first. This place is quite literally a mom-and-pop place: the main waitress and the sushi chef are husband and wife. If you sit down and talk to them for a bit, you'll find that they're very nice and are genuinely happy to have you there. [28 May 2007 01:53:25]

My Personal Favorite I've eaten at this restaurant for years. I eat there at least four times a month.
The staff greets me by name and makes efforts to remember new fans I have sent there. Okay, there are periods where the service needs help and a dish or two is not perfect. But in my opinion, it is how the restaurant responds to issues that counts. I have seen other patrons have meals compensated or replaced to accommodate issues or misunderstandings.
