Superb I've lived in Escondido for 20 years, but am NOT, never have been a professional reviewer. This is an UNSOLICITED and heartfelt assessment of Escondido's Onami Restaurant.
For sushi lovers, Onami is already a well-known favorite - always packed near capacity, but seldom any lines - & for good reason.
For neophytes, a taste delight awaits, as well as a valuable family experience in "non-mainstream" American dining. My teenager, who had discovered the delights of sushi, asked a month in advance for his birthday dinner here. We are all glad he did.
Considering Onami is an "all-you-can-eat" buffet, I see no complaint about the bill whatsoever - other regular buffets have similar prices. However, few if any others have numerous artisans preparing and presenting ultra-fresh, in-season seafood in patterns to delight the eye. Don't forget the large bar of fancy desserts + steamed crab legs by the barrel! Talented chefs will answer all your questions as well as prepare your requests while you watch.
Today, 12/12/03, our weekday lunch price was $12.95@, dinner is $21.95@. Weekends and holidays, add $2@. Now, for that price, where else can you gorge yourself on your favorite sushi, seafoods, salads, sidedishes, desserts while enjoying unequaled Oriental ambience?
We never felt ourselves or our questions out of place, indeed were welcomed with smiles from all the staff, as well as the diners, who were overwhelmingly Asian.
My first bite of the green sushi "topping" that looked like guacamole confirmed my position as neophyte (haole, gai-jin, gwylo? ;). Noticing tears streaming down my face, a smiling and bowing child at the next table jumped up & offered me her ginger slivers, which cooled the fire immediately.
Follow sushi-lovers to a wonderful food and a dining experience, bar none - oh there's beer & wine also - at Onami. ~jill porter [12 Dec 2003 20:00:27]
