I've eaten at Salazar's several times, but it's really nothing special. I lived in Los Angeles for several years and my standards for Mexican food are very high, having been hooked on L.A. restaurants such as Burrito King and Los Burritos.
My last time at Salazar's was with a good friend of mine. He ordered the "Mondo Beer" and a taco. I wasn't too hungry, so I ordered a regular sized beer and beef tacquitos.
Do you know what happens when you deep-fry a stale corn tortilla? It becomes as hard as a rock. In my case, this mostly occurred at the ends of the tortilla "tubes". Secondly, they obviously had deep-fried mine in fish-tainted oil. The tacquitos smelled fishy and tasted fishy.
I think a restaurant should always strive to turn out a product that is AT LEAST better than what can be purchased at a supermarket. I've had much better tacquitos from my supermarket than I got that day from Salazar's.
The capper for our visit came when the waitress brought us the check. My friend's "Mondo Beer"? Nine bucks! Nine bucks for a single beer! (It was definitely a "what the _______?!?" moment).
I said to the waitress, "Isn't that the kind of information you should tell the customer when they place the order?" (See, my friend ordered off one of those table placards, not the menu, and no price was given).
The waitress didn't respond, but instead gave me one of those "like, whatever" looks.
Neither of us have ever been back.
Oh, I forgot a key part of the story. The "Mondo Beer" was severed in this very effiminate fluted glass (plastic actually), that stood about 12 inches high. In other words, the kind of "mug" that would get you beat up in some bars.
Way to understand your customers Salazar's. [14 Jan 2004 16:54:00]
