Unfulfilled gyros lust Somewhere I'd heard this place has gyros made with lamb. Every place in Fresno I've seen seems to make it with beef only. Could it be, I wondered, that my longtime desire for lamb gyros in Fresno would be satisfied? Alas, it was not to be.
This is essentially a fast-food joint. The sandwiches are about $6-8, and the dinners are about $2 more. The sandwich came with turnip chunks pickled in beet juice. I dislike beets and so did not care for the turnips. The dinners I think come with hummus and pita chips or bread. Service was pleasant and efficient.
Gyros is typically made from pressed meat roasted on a vertical spit, and pieces are shaved off. I saw the spits but no meat on them, and thought maybe they had another in the back or something. What I saw on my sandwich was 3, yes, only 3 strips of meat, each a uniform 5x1-inch size. That suggested to me that they either don't cook the meat themselves or they have some cooking process I have never seen before.
The sandwich had tons of lettuce, very little tomato, very strong onions, and very bland tzatziki (cucumber/yogurt sauce). I could deal with the vegetable issues by scraping them off, but a poorly made gyros sandwich with bland tzatziki is sacrilege!
I left with my stomach no longer growling, but with my soul still aching for a good gyros sandwich. [18 Jan 2007 20:38:56]
