Formal Night on the Kern After a long day on the Kern river, a nice steak house is just right. Ewing's Restaurant is priced about average for a fancy restaurant--though there are more people in off-the-river clothes than in formal attire. There is live music on some weekends, and the view is unparalleled. Though the staff may not be prepared to serve a big group, they try hard and are very friendly. The food is cooked to perfection and the portions are large. A recommended stop. [21 Apr 2004 01:00:45]

Fabulous Experience - More bang for your buck From what I learned on my last trip to Kernville, the restaurant that I have known as “Ewings” for over the last 23 years has changed their name to “The Broken Oar.” Many pleasant changes have come along with the restaurant’s name change. The interior glows at this tranquil restaurant, which is half lounge, half restaurant. Both sides stay plenty busy due to the expertly prepared food and cocktails. Portions are generous, and the plates are artfully arranged. The service compliments the food and there are plenty of breath-taking views from this restaurant. The prices have changed from before, but the food is worth it! [10 May 2007 22:03:59]

Feeling Lucky? We Were Not . . . We wish the new owners good luck, but as inexperienced restaurateurs, they have a long way to go to keep this latest version of Ewing's alive. Nice atmosphere and location, but service and inventory disaster; maybe we were just unlucky???? Food was decent, when you got it, if they had it. Had to ask for cocktail service before ordering; they were out of some bar items, out of bread, out of halibut; the salad was sent back twice for the wrong dressing; we were told that steaks had been lost track of, and diners might have to switch plates if we had the wrong orders. I hope they get their act together, as Ewing's could be a real nice asset to the valley. Give them a chance and rate it yourself . . . [30 Apr 2008 12:08:23]
