Nothing Like It on the Planet I've been going to the Rice Bowl for 30+ years. It's like going back in time to the 40's. As you drive up, you'll see the coolest neon sign with the revolving "R". You'll walk in and see this incredible decorated tree sitting in the dining room. Take a seat and check out the juke boxes at every table. The 'Bowl is a family run operation(they live on the second floor) and has existed at the same spot since it was opened just after WWII (without a single change). True story: the founder, Shuck Moon Wong, was a hero and won the silver star in Europe! His family continues to run the place.
The place is absolutely spotless and it's as kitschy as you'll find anywhere. They close the place for one week a year just to clean.
The whole Rice Bowl experience is so unique that expect Hollywood to use it for a movie set for one of those wacky offbeat movies about aliens landing in some small farm town or something like that.
To a newcomer, the food sounds Chinese on the menu but when the waitress delivers is nothing a Chinese person would recognize. It's good, don't get me wrong but this is one the reasons I love the Rice Bowl!
You'll love it! [23 Dec 2005 19:28:16]
