Elegant Dining Created with a Dirty Wine Glass Zahir's moved recently from a hideaway place in obscure Milpitas where I could never find it open for lunch to the location of what was a great German restaurant Gasthaus and then a failed Pacific Palms Grill & Bar which tried to promote billiards and high tech matchmaking. The lunch menu touts Internation Cuisine, however confusion arises with its California & European offering. The dishes are all provided with the Afghani staple: rice, so if you want potatoes, give this a miss. The specials are all predominantely seafood with mushroms and squash making a heavy appearance. My special was a "stew" of mixed seafood: salmon, halibut, red "rock?" snapper in a cream tomato sauce. I declined the rice and vegetables and received a hodgepodge of cubed seafood in a watery, almost tasteless sauce. It appeared the darker meat of most of the fish types had been included, reducing my dish to what appeared to be leftovers. The house wine was a lesser known "premium" label and the waiter had to remove the wine glasses for additional cleaning before pouring of a small but expensive glass of so so Merlot wine occurred.
