No wonder the place was packed!
We started with an order of vegetable samosas. They were great - real peas and chunks of potatoes, not some unidentifiable mush. The pastry shell was crispy and flavorful, and the accompanying chutneys (mint and tamarind) were quite good. They might taste even better with mango powder sprinkled on top - you can probably cajole the waiter into doing this.

We tried the Bhindi and the Rogan Josh, as well as their naan.

If you like okra, be sure to try the Bhindi - slices of (non-gooey) okra with onions and spices. It's a delicious blend of flavors.

The Rogan Josh (a lamb curry) was also excellent. Large chunks of lamb come to your table in a rich brown mildly spicy sauce. The chunks are really too big to pick up with the naan - just cut them first with your fork. The lamb was tender enough that we didn't need a knife.

Only the mango lassi was a disappointment. It had been thinned quite a bit with milk, so the tang of the yoghurt was almost absent, and there wasn't nearly the amount of mango flavor I've come to expect.

Service was excellent on our first visit. We ordered a glass of wine halfway through the meal and it arrived within 60 seconds. The waiter even served the food onto our plates for us. Plates and glasses were cleared away promptly. However, on our second visit, the snooty woman who serves drinks got the order vastly wrong, seemed uninterested in fixing it, and even left the mis-ordered drinks (that we didn't drink) on the bill. Perhaps we would've gotten better service from her if we weren't wearing jeans?    [22 Nov 1999 14:12:47]

Good, Really Good
I'm not an expert on Indian cuisine, but I would classify Amber India as being one of the best Indian restaurants I've had a chance to dine in.    [20 Dec 1999 18:42:41]

Best Indian Restaurant in the Bay Area
This place is great! They are open at lunch with a buffet even on the weekends. A wide variety of dishes were presented on the buffet. With so many people in the restaurant it was continually being refreshed.

The Butter Chicken is tremendous.

This is the best Indian food our family has enjoyed since London!!    [13 Feb 2000 17:57:08]

Undoubtedly the Best Indian Restaurant in the Bay Area
This restaurant excels in all categories. The butter chicken and the chicken tikka masala are a must to try. The sauces are delicately balanced, making them delicious.    [15 May 2001 00:37:16]

Terrible Service
We were so excited to try this restaurant but left the place very disappointed. We waited for an hour for our food to come. Our waiter did not come by to say why the food was delayed, apologize, or even smile. What an attitude. The food was good, ambiance was nice, but we will never return. There are so many other excellent restaurants in the Bay area and this was not worth it.    [28 Apr 2003 14:45:37]

Bad Service
My husband took me for my birthday dinner there! Such a bad ending to a great day! The service was bad. We had to wait amid a crowd and we were passed up by some other people.

The food was OK ... Didn't make up for the bad service!    [23 May 2007 15:27:00]
