Eating sushi can be fun
The best part of eating sushi at Afloat Sushi is that the sushi comes to you! The sushi chefs prepare traditional sushi (tamago, salmon, tuna), as well as many original creations. If you want to see what the sushi looks like before ordering or eating it, this is the place!    [15 Nov 2002 19:07:09]

My wife and I enjoyed our first visit to Afloat Sushi while strolling in Pasadena's Old Town Shopping along the famed Colorado Blvd.

There are many similar sushi set-ups, but what set this apart from, say, Sushi Mac in L.A.'s Brea-Fairfax is that they serve more menu items than their counterparts.    [05 Dec 2002 17:53:45]

Unbelievably good
I went there on a Friday night, and it was pretty full, so it took a while to finally get seated, but the wait was worth it. The sushi is very good and it's pretty cool and original the way it's served or floated, hehe. The one pint of Asahi beer goes great with the food, too!

Just watch out for how many plates you collect. If you eat decently, the bill should come out okay, but if you stuff yourselves till you feel like whales, then you might also pay over $100.00, as the three of us did.

Oh, the service -- there isn't much of it. They give you your drinks right away, and since it's such a large drink, they don't really stop by often, but it is easy to call a waiter/waitress for help.    [20 Jul 2003 03:20:30]

Disappointment ... change of ownership/chef?
I used to go to Afloat at least twice a month. The food was great and the chefs were excellent. However, before my most recent two visits there, they must have changed owners and chefs, because the selections were limited and the type of selection wasn't too appetizing. The food ends up going round and round the table without being eaten. Plus, if you ask the chef (very rude and obnoxious) for any requests, it's nearly impossible or the result is certainly subpar. Service is still reasonable. They fill your cup with tea or water consistently, and the waiters/waitresses are polite. Too bad, since this was once a favorite of mine.    [15 Sep 2003 17:43:24]

Bad news, good news
The bad news is, Afloat Sushi is like Japanese roulette. Your raw, room temperature fish goes 'round & 'round on little boats-in-a-moat for an unspecified amount of time as you gamble on your meal's freshness based on visual and odorous cues. Good news is, your sushi goes 'round & 'round on boats-in-a-moat. LOOK PEOPLE!!! -- this is NOT great sushi, but you will likely have a palatable goofball time (and I DO recommend it for that reason alone). Want to gorge on shovelfuls of bland all-you-can-eat sushi? Hit a Todai. Want good-to-great sushi? Stay out of the valleys. Want to have an inexpensive, silly, kitschy sushi experience with only a slim/marginal chance of food poisoning? I recommend THIS highly!    [19 Oct 2004 22:47:29]

How long is it on those boats?
This place is always crowded, and the kids do indeed love pulling those plates off the boats as they pass by. However, I have had some really dry and stale sushi here. I wonder, at times, just how long has it been floating on those boats? Also, this place is popular, as I said, and they always seem understaffed. You almost have to get up and stand on top of your chair to flag down a waitress.    [10 Feb 2005 20:18:41]

A typical OVER-RATED restaurant!!! It’s "popular" because it’s located in the prime location at Old Town Pasadena in S. California.

After 3+ weeks, the management has not yet replied regarding our horrible incident, involving the questionable quality of raw fish on sushi and the attitude of the arrogant waitress.

First, a waitress named Emily wouldn't let my wife sit down at the sushi bar to start ordering when the number of our party-of-two was called twice; it’s all because I wasn’t present with her at the time.

15 minutes later, I got the car parked, and went in the restaurant. When I confronted Emily, she gave us this horrible attitude and stated it was "company policy" to have ALL diners ON-SITE before seating . . . and "if we don't want to eat, don't block the entry way for their other customers!!!"

Since it was late, and my wife was hungry, we sat down at one of the tables, not at the sushi bar as we requested. We were later given sushi with fish that not only looked bad, but also tasted weird! When we tried to bring the issue to the attention of the upper management, again, the arrogant waitress, Emily, said the owner was not there, she couldn't do anything about it, we could only call the owner's number on the wall if we wanted to complain, but she would call the police if we wanted to cause “ANY MORE” trouble for their business; then she ignored us and went on doing her own stuff, leaving us and other guests stunned and in shock at her attitude!!!

I immediately called that number next to the entrance on the wall (626-379-2221), but got to a voice mail for someone who referred herself as Joanna, indicating that she's out of town, and suggesting that we call her cousin David at 626-236-0213 if it is urgent. Once again, voice mail. I left a message on David's voice mail, stating the whole problem we had that night, hoping to get a response at it.

That was August 5th, and today is the 31st!!! Still not a single phone call addressing our matter!!!

Okay, maybe Joanna is busy all these times, but our urgent calls to David were also ignored!!! Knock on wood . . . but what if we got sick from having those weird tasting raw fish at the restaurant? Who's going to be responsible?

If you don’t believe me, please bring a hidden video camera with voice recorder in there. You also might want to bring this to the attention of proper authorities.

Please tell any friends and family who might go visit Aloat Sushi at Old Town Pasadena about my experience.

Please help the others by letting them know the truth and stop being victimized by these rude people!!!

Thank you for your time to look at my review!    [31 Aug 2006 16:53:22]

Good food!
I am not a fish person, so I was very happy to know that there was some kind of sushi that was not fish and was cooked! This place has the best shrimp tempura/crab rolls ever. I have never had a problem with service. And it is not expensive at all.    [12 Jan 2007 23:14:31]

Sushi Afloat
This place is my favorite place to eat with my honey. I don't care too much for the desserts, but I do love the dragon rolls, vegetable tempura, and my all-time favorite, tempura squid. Oh yeahhhh . . . I'm not too picky about top of the line sushi; heck, it tastes good and is affordable . . . I'm sold. Besides, I have never been sick from their food. Don't listen to the other people on this website; they're just picky American eaters. Ahh . . .    [07 Oct 2008 14:05:17]
