Avoid this place
We arrived for an early lunch and were greeted somewhat less than gracious but a rather dour host. The background music, while not oppressive, was never the less somewhat annoying. Our tortilla chips arrived soon after the refreshments. They were overcooked and slightly greasy with no real flavor. The salsa was mediocre and could use a lesson from much less expensive establishments such as Las Golindrinas. Two of us ordered the enchilidas mariscos and our third member ordered a salad. The food came after a protracted wait. While sipping our soft drinks, our waiter ignored the levels in our beverages. No refills would be forthcoming during the meal. The recipients of the enchilidas were informed that the "plates were hot." In fact, a penguin in Antarctica would have been warmer than the servings. The enchiladas were presented swimming in a disgusting mess resembling dishwater. The tortillas were completely soaked and had degenerated to a pool of cheese adorned goo. A small, but to their credit, fresh side setting of salad was ruined by an overabundance of some sort of gelatinous objects. The pinto beans had been prepared in a very bland and generally unacceptable water base. The side order of rice was uninspired, without flavor, texture or a hint of warmth. My business associate's salad while appearing fresh and green was violated by an overabundance of some sort of dressing which had not been ordered. Our client, acting more than graciously to this slop, finished his meal. We ordered coffee, which was another disappointment. Our waiter was not even concerned that my meal had not been some much as touched. In any better dining establishment, the waiter would have inquired as to the reason the food had not been consumed. Obviously, the staff was indifferent, accustomed to or prepared for ambivalent reactions to what so laughingly is disguised as food in this establishment. In general, this establishment is not even on the same page as such local San Clemente icons like Olamendi's.    [13 Aug 2003 00:22:11]

We loved this place!
The Spanish stye patio and koi pond are a big hit with my family. The atmosphere is relaxed and my son keeps himself entertained with the koi pond. The fajitas are the best we've ever had.    [14 Jan 2007 19:38:58]

Don't Be Prickly About Agave!
Who is this Chef Moz fella? Did he have an off day or late night? I've taken many people to Chato's (aka El Agave) restaurant; we've always been impressed by the food and friendliness. The owners, an elegant pair, are attentive to all and create a distinctive ambiance, whether inside or out. Interesting margaritas, including one with a small bottle of Hornitos tipped into the glass. One dish is presented in a lava metate pig with savory sauce a-bubbling. We often share it, at no extra charge. This is a memorable Mexican menu, only comparable to El Patio (near the historic jailhouse) where the owners hover to insure hunger is hospitably assuaged.    [29 Jun 2007 12:43:31]

Yummy
Shocked by the first review. Just went for the first time and the food was great. It was super-hot and very tasty. Mine had huge lumps of crab meat in a savory sauce. The Margaritas were icy, huge and wonderful. The hostess and the waitress were polite and attentive. The food seemed underpriced. The outdoor seating was serene, yet lively. I would recommend this place.    [23 Jun 2008 19:25:24]
