Traditional Mexican Food San Diego has dozens of Mexican restaurants. You kind of expect it, being just a few miles from the border and the large immigrant population. Cafe Coyote is one of the stars of the Mexican dining scene. Referred to the restaurant by the efficient staff of the convention center information booth, our group (about 8 people) was served quickly and politely after a very short wait in the bar. Outdoor seating (slightly cold for January) was still filled. Inside seating was much warmer, perhaps warmer the closer to the kitchen. The food was excellent, served hot and filling. The fried ice cream was our favorite. [27 Jan 2004 14:25:20]

Cafe Coyote ... YUM. We were referred to the restaurant by a local business owner, who gave us a card for a free appetizer. Not only was the appetizer good, but the entrees were phenomenal! To top it all off, they served the best fried ice cream that we've ever tasted.
While the service was quick and friendly, we felt that we were a little TOO rushed. This is a place if you're in the mood for a quick eat, not a lingering meal. Definitely hoppin'! [12 Sep 2005 13:59:43]

Every single time I'm in San Diego I do my best to go to Cafe Coyote in Old Town.
It's hard to describe why I like Cafe Coyote in just a few sentences. It's one of those places where everything is excellent. I guess the number one reason to me are the tortillas. The tortillas are to die for. Most restaurants neglect the tortilla or don't put too much care into making it. A bad tortilla is like bad bread on a sandwich. It's part of the meal! I could eat just their tortillas and be happy.
I've never really had to wait even on the busy nights. There's a ton of seating. The drinks aren't watered down like some of the other places I could mention. I love their margaritas. Last time I was there they had something I thought was really neat. There's a guy (I forget his name. Mario maybe?) who's a Tequila Ambassador. He goes to your table and talks to you about tequilas. That was cute.
Anyway, I've tried almost all their menu and I've never been disappointed. I saw a banner last time I was there where they said they won best Mexican for 2006. They sure do deserve it. =) [15 Aug 2006 13:58:59]
