Carnivores can’t get enough of this unassuming smoke shack’s Q Carnivores can’t get enough of this unassuming smoke shack’s Q, some of the Bay Area’s best. Owner Eugene "Brother-in-Law" Ponds (from Ponchatoula, Louisiana) has been doing ‘Q’ since before your mama ever conceived of you. Now-defunct #1 opened across from the Cow Palace in 1978, and #2 was born in ‘82. Pork ribs (short-ends $8.25/$14), BBQ brisket ($8.45/$15) and the beefy homemade hot links ($5.75/$10.50) are perennial favorites. The succulent brisket is fall-off-the-fork tender. The mixed, mild and hot sauces are all peppery but sweet. Sides aren’t a highlight - the smoky baked beans are your best bet. Eugene comes in daily to make his secret-recipe deep-dish peach cobbler ($3) and sweet potato pie ($2). If he’s sick, there’s no dessert, it’s that simple. Service is soulful - sing along with KBLX slow-jams while you wait. If the two tables are full, eat in the free parking lot with everyone else. [18 May 2000 22:24:38]
