Nice Romantic Spot My wife and I stumbled into L'Ottavo 9 years ago on a rainy night in the city. We were impressed right away, and go back as often as we can. When we stay in the city we go. And we have even taken the 2-hour drive, just to go to dinner there.
The first thing about L'Ottavo that makes it so special is that it is unassuming. On Sutter, a couple blocks West of Union Square, it is within walking distance of all of the local hotels, but you have to be looking for it. As a result, there is ALWAYS a table, and the crowd is local and consistent.
The second thing I love about it is the atmosphere. L'Ottavo is dark and romantic. Quiet enough for conversation, but loud enough that you are not overheard. The wait staff is friendly and efficient.
But the outstanding aspect of the restaurant, is the food. This is phenomenal Italian food, and it's not in North Beach. It is rustic, yet fancy. Think high-brow Trattoria. The Specials are always reccomended, especially the Bruschetta w/ sun dried tomato and Gorgonzola. It is BY FAR, the best bruschetta I have had anywhere. I have ordered various bisques and they are always top-notch. And last visit, the chef was offering Osso Bucco, my favorite. The veal was fall apart tender, and the tomato based sauce was hearty, but not overpowering. We were so full, we did not order any of the fabulous desserts.
My wife and I love the fact that we can call this little gem "our spot", the food is consistently good, and we will never stop going. [28 Jul 2005 13:14:39]
