Indonesian Garden is hidden in a strip mall in San Gabriel. It's got about as much atmosphere as a second-rate video rental store, but the food is good. Go with a group so you can try a variety of dishes -- recommended are the gado-gado (a sort of Indonesian cooked-vegetable salad with peanut sauce) and the rendang (beef cooked in spicy coconut milk).

Portions are a little small.

The strange drinks are probably the best thing about this restaurant -- they're often brightly-colored, with fruit or gelatinous blobs or other edibles mixed in. You won't find these elsewhere, so muster up your courage and try them -- you'll be glad you did.    [11 Nov 1999 17:51:06]
