Description
Sushi Bar Yoshida got its start in a tiny strip mall in Pasadena, but has recently expanded into this new, bigger space.
Opens at 5pm, and Yoshi's section of the sushi bar fills up shortly afterward.
Yoshida's offers the standard sushi, as well as specialties like pompano, where he serves you two pieces of sushi from a tiny fish, then brings you the fried bones in a tangy sauce a few minutes later.

The fish here is always fresh and delicious. Sushi chef Yoshi picks it out himself at the fish market each morning. You must try the pompano -- Yoshi says it's his own invention, and it's the best thing on the menu (unless you're squeamish). First you get 2 pieces of delicious nigiri sushi from the fish. A few minutes later, he brings you the fish's fried bones, covered in a tasty sauce. When you're done with your meal, ask for an orange -- this is the complimentary dessert. It can be very hard to get a seat some nights, but it's worth waiting for. [18 Aug 1999 20:48:37]

Freshest Fish for the Price You can't get fresher fish for the price at Sushi Bar Yoshida. Everything from the basic tuna to sea urchin is some of the best that I've had and Yoshida (the owner and sushi bar chef) doesn't charge more that $6 per order of toro, sweet shrimp, or sea urchin. Other restaurants will charge $10 for the same quality as Yoshida. The white tuna (albacore) is to die for. Yoshida always gives a generous cut of fish and some of his Americanized rolls are huge. From his spider roll (soft shell crab) to his own Yoshida roll (tuna, yellowtail, crab, and avocado) to his pizza sushi...let's just say that these creations pull in the masses. The scene is casual and the service is friendly. If you are lucky enough to get a seat in Yoshi's territory, he is there to entertain. The only downside is that you have to get there before 6 or after 9 on Fri. and Sat. and sometimes other weeknights to get a seat. Yoshi has a strong almost religious following. Best Sushi I've ever tasted! I love sushi and have tried countless sushi bars across the US and in Japan. I have never had fresher fish with such exceptional taste. The expensive bars can't come close to the quality of sushi at Yoshida's. Yoshi is planning on expanding by year end 2003, so that would help in the only flaw I see...the wait. I'm a dedicated regular, no matter where I move to in Southern Cal. [05 Feb 2003 12:03:19]
