First and Last Visit
Grand Opening

My daughter and I went to the Grand Opening to see what Japanese fusion was all about. Upon entering we were pleased to see a very spacious, clean, and modern looking dacor, completely re-designed from the ground up, with no traces of the old Carrows anywhere to be seen. This being our first time, we didn't know what to expect, but at first, I felt a little underdressed. We were greeted by our host and taken to our table. I asked for mineral water and was brought a 7 dollar bottle of designer water. I opened the menu and at first was a little shocked at how high the prices were. Rather than just getting up and leaving, we decided to share some CA rolls and a 25 dollar dish called the Rodeo (one of the cheaper dishes on the menu). It was a teriyaki and pinnaple glazed steak with mushrooms and rice and some type of sweet puree.

The CA rolls were pretty good, nothing much to complain about there. We were served our main dish without receiving our soup or salad that came with the meal first. When I asked our waitress about the soup and salad, she promptly went to go them. While waiting I sampled some of the food on the plate before us. Cold. The meat was chewy, not as tender as one would like having paid 25 dollars. The mushroom/rice was cold. Then comes the salad and the soup. The salad was ok, the soup, however was not to my liking. I manage to chew through the meat and leave most of the rice and mushroom on the plate. All this time my daughter sits there, not liking any of this cold chewy food. I sat there tallying up the bill in my head and that's when I realized: This is the last time I ever come here. Don't get me wrong. I'll pay the premium prices if it's justified and reflected in the quality of the food. But here, it just wasn't the case.

My Favorite Sushi Place in Sunnyvale!
I used to go to Sushi O Sushi a lot until I discovered Kampai House recently. The price is similar between the two places, but the quality and taste of the sushi is much better at Kampai House. I enjoyed the nigiri made by the head chef very much. The house roll "Kampai Crunch" $9)was filled eel and tempura shrimp, impectable blend of flavor and texture, and very generous portion.

The fusion starters and signature plates were also worth exploring. The Captain Crunch (3 jumbo prawns coated with sweet pumpkin puree and almond chips for $9) was a deal! Kyoto Emerald ($19), broild black cod marinated in sake and miso, was sweet, delicate, and beautifully presented over a bed of yam.

The brand new decor and music just added more to the overall experience. One thing for sure is that I will return to this restaurant because of the food, value, and the ambiance.    [01 Aug 2006 21:44:21]

A cool joint
The environment is very nice. Clean and modern. (the bathrooms are nice too!) The staff was very friendly and the food was very eye catching. Our dragon roll sushi looked like a dragon! I'd recommend this place!    [16 Oct 2006 15:15:33]

Sunnyvale goes Trendy!
I thought I was in San Francisco when I walked into Kampai House. Contemporary, sleek, and hip ambiance was a WOW. The bathroom was another surprise. The big screen TV was broadcasting live sushi making. Energetic house music was just right for the mood and a volume that did not prohibit conversation.

"Geishia" was a very pretty pink cocktail with the right blend of vodka. Sushi rolls were incredible - presentation as well as taste. My favorite was the "Fuji Volcano" (chef special by request). It was a riceless roll, with hirame, salmon, crab salad mix, and some other ingrediants, came on a black plate with blue flame from the burning vodka, topped with spicy tobiko sauce at the end. This roll was for adults only!!!The Signature Large Plates "Kyoto Emerald" (black cod miso) and "Yokohama Mama" (lamb chops marinated in special miso) were both very delicous.

I highly recommend this restaurant for those people who goes to restaurants to enjoy life. Best of all, I don't have to drive all the way to San Francisco for great fusion Japanese cuisine anymore!    [08 Sep 2006 19:58:28]
