Unbelievably delicious, great atmosphere Kim Severson (sfgate) described this restaurant's interior as distinctly Spanish. It's 4.5 months later (August 2001), and there are now more Indian elements to the unique, mixed interior. I like it the way it is -- it seems more genuine than other restaurants that try to apply an obviously artificial "theme", and definitely is a comfortable atmosphere for dining.
The food was incredible. I've never had better Indian cuisine in the $8-12 range. The tandoori chicken was sizzling hot and spiced just right. The "vegetable balls in sauce" (I forget the Indian name) were also delicious -- warmly and richly spiced. And all dinner meals were served with generous helpings of condiments, sauces, and side dishes (spiced rice, raita, dal, naan). I took the rest of my meal home, and still had enough for two brown bag lunches at work.
I can't wait to try the lunch buffet at this place. Mmmmmm.
If you live in Hayward, Fremont, San Lorenzo, anywhere nearby, you must patronize this restaurant at least once, or you'll kick yourself for missing out on a great experience.
Plus, it's in a neighborhood with a couple of Indian grocery stores and other Indian shops, so if you like to cook, you can pick up your Indian ingredients on the way. [21 Aug 2001 16:27:58]

It is delicious! My husband and I have passed by this restaurant for the past six years without stopping by.....until a month ago, when we finally stopped in for the lunch buffet.
As a vegetarian, I am always a little worried about restaurant owners not understanding that I don't eat any kind of meat, poultry or fish. However, when I asked about the lunch buffet having vegetarian only dishes, I was incredibly pleased to learn that one-half of the buffet table was vegetarian only!! The host knew what I was asking, and guided me to what had no meat.
My husband loves lamb, chicken, fish, meat, etc., and was also super pleased about THAT side of the buffet.
It is about one month later -- after first experiencing this restaurant -- and although we have been there six times more (!!), I am still salivating over the Palak Paneer and the other extraordinary dishes that Handi serves.
The servers are very prompt and polite; the atmosphere is casual and comfortable; and the food is simply AWESOME.
My husband and I highly recommend Handi as a lunch or dinner destination to ANYONE, ANYWHERE in the San Francisco Bay area.
Happy dining! [06 Mar 2002 12:20:03]

Great place for parties too.. I have hosted a few company and family parties there. They provide you with a huge selection of food and the prices are great. Most times they close the restaurant to the public and cater to your group. [27 Nov 2002 15:22:42]
