Rude owner / Poor service I had been to this place a few times before. Nothing exceptional, but their desserts were good. Then one day my wife and I sat there nursing a glass of wine for 55 minutes. The waiter had take our order, but didn't deliver. After about 30 min. I asked if we could at least have our salads. Nope. After 55 minutes I went to the back and complained to the owner/manager. I was shocked at his reaction, which was like "oh well, we'll look into it soon". I said don't bother, you have wasted and ruined our lunch date. His response was "if you want to leave, you must pay for the two glasses of wine you drank". I did and told him that we will never go to his place, even if we have to starve to death. Even the waiters came over and apologized to us on our way out, but the owner was standing there with his rude attitude. [06 Mar 2003 13:02:17]

Never had a bad meal or poor service Everyone has their own bad personal experience at a restaurant. Lord knows, I have occassionally had my own. La Frite has been a wonderful exception. My wife and I have eaten at both locations and consider La Frite one of our neighborhood haunts. As regulars, it's nice to know that the minute my wife and I sit down, I am brought my iced tea and warm rolls/butter is placed on the table by one of the bus boys. Though we have never formally introduced ourselves by name (I am a bit shy when it comes to that kind of familiarity), the various managers and waiters are very nice to us. The food is consistently very good. My wife sticks to the tried and true (seafood quiche, 'Meg' pizza, mixed greens salad, crab bisque). I tend to negotiate the menu to try different things. The specials are always high on my list and I love the variety of soup specials they offer. There is a different soup, meat and fish special every night, though many make return trips to the specials menu. So, all in all, these are not five star restaurants, but consistently very good overall. [27 Mar 2004 19:17:24]

Never going back again My wife and I had to wait to get seated for 10 minutes. Usually when you walk into a restaurant you would like to be seated right away unless there is a long line. Once we got seated it took about another 10 minutes before the server came to our table. She excused her tardiness on the count of "coming back from break time". The wait for our food wasn't long considering only a few guests were there. Once the food came everything was ok. I am usually one to tip plenty for hard working servers. On this occasion our server didn't even offer a refill and tried avoiding my wife calling her for service. I will never go back to this small neighborhood French restaurant. VERY poor service. Best Restaurant Ever I have been to LaFrite many times, and never once had bad service or food. Every experience I had there was exceptional. I am a vegetarian and always have a tough time finding items on menus that don't specialize in vegetarian dishes, and the staff has always been helpful. Fantastic wines, deserts, cappucinos, A+ [25 Jul 2006 20:15:25]

Great place if you like eating glass I met a former co-worker for lunch one day and we both had a salad. I'm about five minutes into my salad when all of a sudden I hear & feel a huge crunch. I reached into my mouth and pulled out several pieces of glass! I couldn't believe it and neither could my friend. She called the waitress over who called the owner over. He was very rude [and] suggested I put the glass there myself. He did not apologize or even offer to buy my lunch. I'm not sure how the glass got into my salad, all I know is I could have broken a tooth. What a total jerk. Does not deserve your business. [20 Jan 2007 21:57:11]

A Place to Take My Best Client -- My Mom! La Frite Cafe is one of my favorite places to dine in Sherman Oaks. I am an event planner and chef. My family comes from many generations of French cuisine. From the warm welcome at the door to the always perfect food and service, La Frite Cafe exceeds my very high expectations. Thank you to the owners for keeping our French traditions of hospitality and respect for cuisine.
