Description
Tucked into a small shopping strip three miles west of downtown Pagosa on the north side of Hwy 160 next to an H&R Block and a fitness center, this intimate, husband and wife operated dining room specializes in a small plate tapas style "grazing" menu in addition to its regular menu of full entrees, salads, grilled pizzas, and sandwiches. With a distinctive pan-asian flair, 565 Grill features such items as Tuna Sashimi, Pot stickers, Jumbo Sea Scallops in Curry Tomato Sauce, and Beef, Chicken, or Shrimp and Lump crab Nachos from its Grazing Menu, as well as a variety Asian-amped seafood and steaks from its regular menu. Beer, spirits, and wine are served, the latter by the bottle or glass. The dining room seats roughly 30 at a combination of tables and booths.

Innovative and subtle This is possibly the best restaurant in Pagosa, at least as regards the food. While it lacks a bar (for me an important element) and the room is small, the food is subtle, innovative, and very well prepared. In particular the seafood (try the jumbo sea scallops or tiger shrimp off the grazing menu) is both varied and cooked with wonderful attention to detail. While there are a small number of other restaurants in town capable of not ruining seafood, often they either try too hard and over-sauce or bury it in ingredients, or they are too run-of-the-mill. 565 Grill finds a near perfect balance of texture and flavor. Service is as attentive as one would expect when the sole server is the wife in this husband wife run restaurant (the husband is the chef), and the only possible knock would be the sometimes slow pace if things are busy in the dining room – but if slow pace is a problem it is endemic to this small, laid back town in general. Frankly, a night out at a good restaurant should not be a hurried affair anyway. (My three-star rating on the ambiance is for the lack of bar - I like to belly up before a meal...) Good food. We were visiting Pagosa Springs on a skiing trip and were tired of typical fast food places. 565 Grill is a small Mom and Pop type of place. We loved the food and the atmosphere. We ordered 4 tapas plates for the three of us and 3 bowls of rice which left us perfectly satisfied, yet not stuffed. The hot tea was great. I would come again. If you like light, healthy, Asian food in general this is a place to go.
PS. If you find out what 565 stands for let me know. [26 Dec 2007 23:01:57]

Don't overlook! A small, delightful retreat where you can go and relax, know that the service and food will be excellent and enjoy your favorite beverage and drink without dressing up, feeling pushed or slighted - whether local or guest, you get the first class treatment right from the start. If you have visited this cafe before, though small in size but big in offerings, Kikko will know what you want and have your favorite wine or appitizer already ordered for you before you can settle in for a nice, casual but well prepared meal. Mike, the chef/owner, prepares a variety of interesting selecions from both the grazing menu to the seafood and meat entree selections. Try the Angus steak and scallops combo, excellent and if you pair that with their delightful potstickers (YUM!!), your enjoyment is gaurenteed. If you are really hungry, the entrees will fill you but if you just wish a smaller amount of food, the grazing menu, pizzas or salads will more than satisfy your need. This is one of Pagosa's hidden secrets! [19 Jan 2008 16:45:57]

Wonderful Food, Relaxed Atmosphere Looking for something different for dinner, we happened upon a review for the 565 Grill and were intrigued enough to try it. What a good decision! It was hard to decide between the regular menu and the "grazing menu" but we chose several of the tapas: Jumbo scallops w tomato curry sauce, cooked to perfection; shrimp & crab nachos with a delicious green chili sauce and shrimp and pork potstickers. Each of the three dishes was wonderful and with a bowl of rice, a full meal for two. Add their soft music, attentive service and reasonable prices and the 565 Grill is a winner.
